Celebrating a Legacy of Success

Founded as All-Star Racing in 1984, before changing its name to Hendrick Motorsports a year later, Rick Hendrick’s NASCAR Cup Series operation has become the most successful in the sport’s history, winning more races and championships than any other team. After launching in 1984 with five full-time employees and 5,000 square feet of space, Hendrick Motorsports now employs more than 600 team members and boasts 430,000 square feet of space at its Concord, N.C. campus.

Using six cars, six 80-inch video monitors, descriptive graphic panels, and more than 75 individual artifacts and 160 photographs, the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s “Hendrick Motorsports 40 Years” exhibit features an in-depth look at the race team, the people who built it and the milestones the organization has achieved over the last 40 years.

Created in close collaboration with Hendrick Motorsports, this exhibit showcases many never-seen-before artifacts from the team’s earliest days right up to and including the 2024 season.

The exhibit features six main themes:

1. INNOVATION

Hendrick Motorsports is the most successful organization in NASCAR Cup Series history. Their success can in part be credited to pioneering a variety of innovations that have changed the traditional auto racing business model.

  • Car: Hendrick Chassis No. 937
  • Driver: Jimmie Johnson, No. 48
  • Won three race victories in 2015 and 2017

2. Cultivating Talent

With a keen eye for talent, patience and a willingness to gamble, Rick Hendrick has found success developing drivers and crew chiefs, with little NASCAR Cup Series experience, into winners and champions, as well as bolstering drivers who joined the team mid-career.

  • Car: NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet Camaro
  • Driver: Chase Elliott, No. 9
  • 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Champion

3. Transforming Pit Crews

In the mid-1990s, Hendrick Motorsports changed how pit crews operated. Instead of using mechanics to go over the wall on pit stops, the team recruited, hired and trained former college athletes to service its race cars, saving valuable time on pit road.

  • Car: HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro
  • Driver: Kyle Larson, No. 5
  • 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion

4. Rewriting The Record Book

Hendrick Motorsports holds a NASCAR Cup Series record for most race victories (more than 300), most series championships (14) and most number of different drivers to win titles with the team (5). Hendrick’s 29 victories at Martinsville Speedway are the most by any team at a single track.

  • Car: Chevrolet Monte Carlo
  • Driver: Jimmie Johnson, No. 48
  • 2007 NASCAR Cup Series Champion

5. Gaining Attention

The phenomenal success enjoyed by Hendrick Motorsports has helped elevate the sport of NASCAR in popular culture. The team’s entry in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023 brought new eyes to the sport.

  • Car: 2023 Garage 56 Edition Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (Street Version)
  • Drivers: Jimmie Johnson, Jensen Button and Mike Rockenfeller

6. Unwavering Leadership

Throughout all 40 years of Hendrick Motorsports’ history, team founder Rick Hendrick’s leadership has been unwavering, with a focus on family and team members working closely together to achieve success. Forty years of racing has seen the team enjoy many triumphs as well as trials, tribulations and even tragedy. Through it all, the team has proven it is stronger together.
